Winter Safety Tips

Start with Safety: Get Your Gas Furnace Inspected Before You Turn It On

Don’t wait until you need to turn on the heat to make sure your gas furnace is safe

With cooler weather moving in, now is the time to get your gas furnace inspected to ensure you and your family are safe.

We encourage our customers to have their home’s natural gas appliances checked at least once a year by a licensed heating contractor or plumber. SDG&E also offers free safety checks to ensure all appliances are operating safely and efficiently.

Failing to perform annual maintenance on gas appliances may result in exposure to carbon monoxide, which can be dangerous or even deadly.

A gas furnace check could also help you save on energy costs by ensuring your appliances are operating properly. Home heating typically accounts for more than half of the monthly winter gas bill. The best way to keep gas bills low and ensure appliances are operating properly is to have them inspected.

To schedule a free safety inspection, call SDG&E at 800-411-7343 or schedule your appointment online through our Gas Appliance Check page. More information on proper maintenance for your gas furnace can be found on our Furnace Safety page.

In addition to regular inspections, here are some simple tips to help you keep your gas appliances running safely and efficiently this winter season:

Safety Tips for Gas Appliances

  • Never use gas ovens or other appliances for space heating.
  • Check the batteries in carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms regularly and replace as needed.
  • Periodically check gas appliances to make sure pilot lights and burner flames are clear blue. A soft yellow flame can indicate carbon monoxide.
  • Always make sure the damper is open when using a gas fireplace.
