Gas & electric crews put their skills to the test at August 5 competition
This isn’t your typical rodeo.
On August 5, we’re swapping lassos, barrel races and bull riding for power poles, bucket trucks and hardhats, as we host the 2017 Gas & Electric Lineman Rodeo in Alpine.
Dozens of teams representing SDG&E, Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and other neighboring utilities will put their abilities to the test, competing in events focused on safety, skill and speed.
While linemen are used to working under tough conditions, like harsh winds and high temperatures, they’ll experience something entirely different at the rodeo—cheering crowds.
“Lineman and gas crews are an elite force,” said Joseph Torres, SDG&E’s in-house rodeo expert and construction manager for Orange County electric operations. “The rodeo is a unique opportunity for the public—and even our crews’ own families—to see them in action.”
Bringing home the gold
Beyond bragging rights, teams will be vying for a spot to compete at the International Lineman’s Rodeo in Kansas on Oct. 13.
Rodeo games are designed to show how electric and gas linemen are at the top of the safety game, using best practices and tools to ensure our customers receive clean, safe, reliable service every day.
“If anyone understands the importance of safety while on the job, it is our lineman and gas crews,” added Torres. “The rodeo gives us a chance to educate the community about what we do, how we do it and how dedicated we are to providing safe, reliable service under any circumstance.”

The Lineman Rodeo is more than a competition for our front line professionals—it’s a fun day for the entire family! Beyond getting a sneak peek at what it takes to be a lineman, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a chili cook-off, vendor booths, rides, games, entertainment and more.
