SDG&E Comments on City Council’s Approval of New Franchise Agreements

We are pleased that the City Council saw fit to approve these agreements. Our 4,500 employees are proud to continue serving local families, schools, and businesses.

Our good-faith discussions with the City of San Diego reflect our mutual commitment to meeting the City’s forward-looking energy and climate goals. Integral to both agreements is a spirit of collaboration, transparency, and a commitment to resetting our relationship with the City. These agreements call for more transparency and accountability, support the City’s renewable energy and clean air goals, and promote equity for every neighborhood.

Mayor Todd Gloria, his administration, and the City Attorney challenged us to identify new and creative ways to work with the City in seeking modernized franchise agreements. These agreements reflect feedback received during the robust public process and demands from the City Council for greater transparency and accountability. We appreciate the passion and constructive efforts of all the leaders at the City who supported this effort. Mayor Gloria’s drive to reach agreements that are in the best interest of his constituents is evidenced in the new, unique Energy Cooperation Agreement – which will ensure that SDG&E is held accountable to our commitments.

Our goal has been and will always be to deliver a bright energy future to the people of San Diego and ensure the City remains a clean and equitable energy leader and model for decades to come. Coming to these agreements took a tremendous amount of effort and compromise on both sides, and we believe the result is a positive outcome for the City of San Diego and its citizens, and positions San Diego as a national leader.
