Scott Drury Recognized for Efforts to Promote Diversity in the Energy Industry

At SDG&E, we’ve made it our core mission to improve lives and communities by building the cleanest, safest and most reliable energy company in America. Central to this philosophy is our dedication to diversity.

On Monday, July 18, more than 100 energy and community leaders gathered to recognize SDG&E President Scott Drury for his career-long efforts to promote diversity in the energy industry.

Drury was presented with the Outstanding Energy Executive Award by the California Utilities Diversity Council (CUDC) and Hispanics in Energy, a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating Hispanic inclusion in America’s energy industry.  Also sponsoring the reception were the National Utilities Diversity Council (NUDC) and more than a dozen community-based organizations, businesses, and industry associations.

As co-founder of the NUDC, past co-chair of the CUDC, and throughout his career at SDG&E, Drury was honored for working to expand opportunities and representation in the energy industry, not only for the diverse people of California, but also across America. Drury has led efforts throughout Sempra Energy’s employee diversity council, local site-based diversity and inclusion councils, and worked hard to ensure mentoring efforts across the company have a lens of diversity and inclusion—helping to propel SDG&E as a recognized leader in the space.

At SDG&E, our commitment to diversity is more than just lip service. We believe the company’s diversity efforts not only produce better business decisions, but also creates a culture that promotes different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences and represents the customers, suppliers, and the communities we serve.

Last year, we achieved the highest level of spending with diverse businesses in the company’s history—purchasing 43 percent, or nearly $619 million, of goods and services from diverse suppliers in 2016. This marked the fourth consecutive year that SDG&E’s supplier diversity spending surpassed 40 percent, far exceeding the CPUC’s goal of 21.5 percent.
