Under the early morning sun last Sunday, the ground in Kearny Mesa vibrated as more than 150 motorcycles made their way to the Harley-Davidson store before setting out on a 100-mile journey though San Diego.
While there were many familiar faces from San Diego’s HOG riding clubs, last weekend’s ride was about more than scenic views and fresh air—it was about community. These riders were part of the first ever SD Rides4ALZ, logging miles to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s San Diego and the vital services they provide to San Diegans battling Alzheimer’s disease.

SD Rides4ALZ was the brainchild of SDG&E President Scott Drury, who is one among 200,000 local families impacted by the degenerative disease. For the past seven years, Scott and his family have cared for his mother during her fight against Alzheimer’s.
Scott’s family’s experience led him to the idea for SD Rides4ALZ, which then blossomed into the community ride that brought together hundreds of San Diegans and raised nearly $75,000 for Alzheimer’s San Diego to support their programs and local research toward a cure for San Diego’s third-leading cause of death.
With nearly 65,000 San Diegans battling Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, the free programs and services provided by Alzheimer’s San Diego are critical to the health and safety of our communities.
SD Rides4ALZ was a great event, but it was just a warmup for Alzheimer’s San Diego.
