At SDG&E, we are focused on being the most reliable energy company in America because we know that anytime the power goes out it disrupts our customers’ lives. It’s our job to focus every day on safely keeping the lights on and sometimes that means we need to improve the power grid.
One of the ways we’re continuing to enhance reliability for our customers and continue to integrate renewable energy into our system is by working with the California Independent System Operator(CAISO) to build a new 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission line that will connect our Sycamore Canyon and Peñasquitos substations. Due to the unexpected loss of power generation at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, this new line will provide an additional transmission source to enhance reliability on the grid and help deliver increasing amounts of renewable energy to the San Diego coastal area.
Serving a critical need
The CAISO, an independent grid operator in the western U.S. that helps manage the flow of the transmission system and generation resources in the state, determined that this transmission line is critically needed to ensure that San Diego has a reliable grid. A transmission line carries electric power from generating plants to the substations that deliver power to our customers.
The majority of the transmission line project – about 11.5 miles of the 15 mile line – will be built underground under existing roads and bridges in the communities of Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch.
Benefits:
- Improves reliability on the power grid;
- Integrates existing renewable energy into our system; and
- No long-term visual impacts since the majority of the transmission line will be underground.
Construction to start in the coming weeks
Construction of underground portion of the transmission line will begin in February 2017 and additional phases will begin in May and August of 2017. The project is scheduled to be complete in June 2018.
