Earth Heroes

Ms. Smarty-Plants Empowers ‘Earth Heroes’

Superman may play a fictional part in saving the Earth, but Ms. Smarty-Plants is a real-life hero—empowering young students every day to conserve water and protect the planet’s natural resources. Ms. Smarty-Plants Planet Cool! offers students all over San Diego a dynamic, interactive educational experience through field trips, assemblies and community outreach events aimed at spreading awareness about the risks of climate change.

Education and exposure are the first steps to empowering change and protecting our planet. Through SDG&E’s Environmental Champions initiative, we support nonprofit organizations committed to helping cultivate a future generation of passionate, globally-aware environmentalists through climate science and conservation education programs.

Water conservation is cool

Getting kids excited about water conservation isn’t easy. But Ms. Smarty-Plants Planet Cool! takes a playful and compelling approach to teaching that promotes critical thinking about the environment and enables students to engage with the issues in real, observable terms. For example, did you know that you can save up to four gallons of water by turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth?

The hope is by giving students critical information, offering everyday solutions and inspiring them to take action, they will become environmental advocates in their own communities. Last year, Ms. Smarty-Plants Planet Cool! reached an astounding 80,000 students in grades K-8.

There’s a high demand for Earth’s superheroes. So now there are three Ms. Smarty-Plants who have become the recognizable faces of the program, empowering students to join in their heroic efforts through fun-filled lessons. Their approach, which encourages a learning experience using all of the senses to connect with nature, has been received with glowing praise and leaves a lasting impression.

Expanding Its Reach

With our proud support, the program will be expanding its reach in East County, offering Ms. Smarty-Plants Planet Cool! in English and Spanish to underserved schools. It’s never too early to learn how to protect the planet.
