This morning, students from King-Chavez Academy were joined by Mike Schneider, SDG&E’s chief environmental officer and vice president of operations support, at Lake Murray to give something special back to our local watershed—trout!

Sponsored by the San Diego River Park Foundation, the Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Trout in the Classroom Program gave students the opportunity to spend six exciting weeks raising native rainbow trout from eggs to juveniles, learning about the fragile species and preparing for today’s release into their new home at Lake Murray, along the San Diego River watershed.

River Kids Discovery Days starts now

Today’s trout release is part of a special event hosted each year by the San Diego River Park Foundation that gets some of our youngest environmental stewards excited about their role protecting our natural resources—River Kids Discovery Days. The two-day celebration of the San Diego River is designed to inspire youth and their families to explore and appreciate the River and the wildlife it supports.

Over the course of today and tomorrow, families are invited to participate in more than a dozen community service projects and educational events at multiple locations, including habitat restoration, science activities, hikes, art projects and more.

There’s no time like the present

Don’t wait until next year to get involved—visit River Kids Discovery Days to see how you can spend some time this weekend enjoying the San Diego River as an environmental steward!

Learn more about the San Diego River

The 52-mile waterway is critical to our natural resources, providing habitat to native plants and animals and reducing flooding during heavy rains. At SDG&E, we recognize the importance of the San Diego River to our region, which is why we are proud to partner with the San Diego River Park Foundation and support their mission to increase appreciation and stewardship for our region’s namesake waterway.
