How Natural Gas Fuels the San Diego Ice Arena

Safe, reliable and clean…pretty much sums up why natural gas fuels the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa according to owner Philip Linssen. Check out this video to learn about how clean natural gas keeps the ice cool:

“Ice rinks have a hard time staying in business because of the high cost of doing business. The lower cost of natural gas allows us to stay open a lot longer, make the rink a lot colder and keep the ice a lot harder and natural gas has a lower emissions that other fuels,” said Linssen.

When Linssen took over the rink more than 16 years ago, he and his family invested in energy efficiency measures and were one of the first companies to join SDG&E’s natural gas program. An on-site natural gas station enables them to fill up their natural gas vehicles, including the Zambonis which run on natural gas.

Natural gas is an efficient and reliable energy source for the ice rink’s operations to support the many skating and hockey programs. “We spend a lot of energy trying to make sure we’re as efficient as possible not only for the short term, but for the long term, so we can keep this business running for many, many years to come.”
