It’s the distance across the sun, the approximate population of the City of San Francisco, the weight of a jumbo jet at full capacity—and the number of meals the San Diego Food Bank will be able to provide to those in need with the energy savings achieved through the organization’s recent LEED v4 Gold Status certification for its facility.

Through our support of the San Diego Green Building Council’s Green Assistance Program, the San Diego Food Bank is the first and only facility in the county to achieve the new and more stringent LEED v4 Gold Status and is on its way to being the greenest food bank in the nation.
LEEDing the way
Through the new, specialized LEED v4 certification, building industry volunteers worked closely with the Food Bank on a checklist of environmentally healthy practices to reduce water and waste, increase energy efficiency and incorporate more effective operations to “green” the facility.
This isn’t the first time that SDG&E has teamed with the San Diego Green Building Council to achieve energy savings in the community. Previous projects have included a number of facilities in Balboa Park and the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Currently, SDG&E and the San Diego Green Building Council are working with the Ronald McDonald House in San Diego to help them reduce energy and water use by 25% and set in place sustainability practices that will help them achieve LEED certification for operations & maintenance.
