Throughout the year, emergencies and natural disasters are something we as a community prepare and plan for. When it comes to our local first responders, it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when we will experience an emergency. Considering we could possibly have the hottest summer on record, which can pose a greater fire risk, the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation partnered with us at SDG&E to host the San Diego Regional Emergency Preparedness & Fire Summit at our Energy Innovation Center.
The workshop brought together local businesses, community leaders, state officials, military and first responders to address how our community can collaborate to prepare for and respond to the potential impact of disasters and emergencies—from wildfires and earthquakes, to drought risk, climate change and terrorist activity.
With more 100 attendees, guests heard from leaders like Supervisor Ron Roberts, SDG&E’s Chief Operating Officer Caroline Winn and Cal Fire Southern Region Chief Thom Porter, about how our collaborative work is helping to build more resilient communities.
The summit also recognized the importance of the role climate is playing when it comes to emergency preparedness. Our meteorologist, Brian D’Agostino, provided information on some of the new, state-of-the-art technologies SDG&E is using to provide the most comprehensive weather report in the region. Using the largest utility-owned weather network in the country, SDG&E provides information like wind speeds, humidity and temperatures to local fire agencies, which they use to determine their response strategies during an emergency.
