About the California Least Tern

Expected to arrive in San Diego next month, the California Least Tern—a migratory shorebird that nests along the California coast—relies on habitats in San Diego County for 60% of its breeding population. As a ground-nesting bird that needs clean sandy areas to nest, the Least Tern is at risk of losing its breeding spaces to predators and development.

Saturday’s family-friendly event will give volunteers the opportunity to learn more about the Least Tern and other native plant and animal species that call Mission Bay “home” and how we can each make a difference protecting the natural resources they need to thrive.
