When You Eat, Sleep and Breathe Fire Safety

Working for a cause that you believe in is what most of us aspire to and for Penney Newell, that cause is fire safety and emergency preparedness.

As a senior community relations manager at SDG&E, Penney is responsible for our charitable giving focused on safety. She spends her days with fire agencies, police foundations and first responders to fund the vital programs and equipment they need to keep our communities safe.

Usually she plays the role of cheerleader and supporter. Earlier this month, the roles were reversed. Penney was the one honored with awards and accolades from the San Diego County Fire Chiefs Association.

A Decade of Supporting the Annual Wildland Drill

During a special ceremony both SDG&E and Penney Newell were recognized for making the San Diego County Wildland Fire Preparedness Exercise a reality. We have sponsored the annual wildland drill – a three-day event – for nine straight years.

Each year, hundreds of regional firefighting forces come together for specialized training on emergency communications, firefighter survival, structure defense and hose deployments under simulated emergencies. With fire season turning into a year-round threat, these types of training for first responders will ensure our community remains ready and resilient.

“Thank you to SDG&E and Penney – your efforts are an important part of making the exercise a true success,” said the San Diego County Fire Chiefs Association. “These efforts ensure that all San Diego County Fire Agencies and Cooperators are trained and ready to respond to Wildland Fire Incidents throughout our region. Thank you again for your continued support.”
