Tales of a New EV Driver: Finding the Missing Green Puzzle Piece

For SDG&E Senior Market Advisor Margy Brookes, being green isn’t a sometimes thing—it’s a way of life. From using her own reusable dishes at meetings to diligently recycling at home, Margy embraces green living whenever possible.

Margy had been an early adopter of energy efficient and sustainability features at home, but it wasn’t until last spring that she made the jump to an electric vehicle (EV). Despite being well versed in the benefits of EVs, Margy wasn’t the type to buy a new car because of new features—Margy liked to drive her cars until the end of the road.

Timing is everything

“While my environmentally-driven heart wanted to jump on the EV bandwagon long ago, I wasn’t going to do it until the timing was right,” Margy reflected. “My Honda Civic was holding up just fine, as was my husband’s 19 year old Toyota truck.”

It wasn’t long before the stars aligned in Margy’s favor. Her husband’s truck was nearing its final journey with only a few months left in the tank, putting the Brookes in the market for a new ride.

Margy happily began the search for the right EV and quickly stumbled upon another bit of good news—now that the technology isn’t brand new, you can get a great deal on a pre-owned clean-driving machine. The ride that fit the bill—for the environment and the Brookes’ budget—was an all-electric 2014 Nissan Leaf.

The Nissan hatchback was the perfect fit for Margy and her husband. It was red, zippy, comfortable, and had plenty of space to carry their art, gardening and home improvement supplies.

For Margy, the environmental benefits were the deciding factor in switching to an all-electric drive, but the convenient workplace charging, roughly $100 in monthly gas savings and special EV rate options are definitely nice perks.
