SDG&E grant helps San Diego Blood Bank acquire much needed blood refrigeration storage

From emergency hospital procedures to life-long battles with chronic illness, the medical demand for blood is constant—the supply is not.

Each year in the San Diego area, more than 100,000 patients of all ages, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds depend on the San Diego Blood Bank for the treatments and blood donations they need to survive a variety of life-threatening conditions.

Preserving blood donations in a temperature controlled environment is critical to operations at the San Diego Blood Bank. With the Blood Bank’s existing freezer system at maximum capacity and no overflow storage available, adding new storage would provide the organization with space to properly store life-saving donations in the event of an emergency or surplus collection.

Better preparedness builds stronger communities

To ensure this critical link to the region’s healthcare system is equipped with the technology to best serve the needs of our communities, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) recently awarded a $20,000 grant to the San Diego Blood Bank. Combined with contributions from other sources, the Blood Bank fully funded the purchase of a specialized refrigeration unit that will better prepare our region for an emergency before one happens.

The grant was awarded as part of SDG&E’s philanthropic initiative aimed at improving our region’s safety and emergency preparedness. Supporting non-profit organizations that encourage safety in all aspects of life in the region empowers our communities to grow safer, stronger and smarter.
