Spring into Action: Preparing for the Time Change

Spring into Action: Preparing for the Time Change

This weekend (March 14), we’re gearing up to "Spring Forward,” adding another hour of daylight into our lives. This time of year is a great reminder to check on essential items, like batteries, so you can ensure you and your family are safe and prepared.

  • While most devices will automatically reset themselves, add an hour to any clocks, ovens, microwaves, etc., to avoid incorrect time readings. This is also a great time to unplug unnecessary appliances if not in use. Remember, devices or appliances continue to draw power from the outlet even when not in use. Unplugging those devices will help save energy and money.
  • Check your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors and replaces batteries (if not hard-wired). These alarms can help protect your family from a fire or other hazard, providing early warnings of any danger.
  • Replace old light bulbs – Odds are that you will be using a stepladder to update your alarms, so while you have it out, go ahead and check your light bulbs and fixtures to make sure that they are in good working order.
  • Review your family emergency plan – or take the time to create one. Hold a meeting with family members to explain what to do/where to go in case of an emergency.
  • Check your first aid kit and replace items as necessary.
  • Call 811 before you dig - Is working on your green thumb part of your Spring plan? If it is, remember to call 811 before you dig to help you avoid hitting underground gas or electric lines. Learn more at sdge.com/811
