As we get ready to spend the holiday season with our loved ones, San Diego County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit is adding another furry friend to its pack of crime-fighting canines who help to protect and serve our communities.
As part of our commitment to public safety, we are proud to support the Honorary Deputy Sheriff’s Association (HDSA) with a $10,000 donation that enabled the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department to bring on a third trained dog to its Search and Rescue K-9 Unit.
For 30 years, the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit has worked throughout the county to support patrol officers and answer calls. All sheriff’s deputies and their canine partner undergo a rigorous 22-week training that covers tracking, narcotics detection and search and rescue.
Many of the dogs are also certified to respond in search and rescue missions involving water, avalanche and other disasters making them extremely valuable to the team. It is estimated that a single dog team can be as effective as 20 to 30 trained human searchers in locating a missing person.

HDSA is a volunteer organization dedicated to tangibly helping the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department by building and maintaining training facilities, purchasing tactical equipment, funding specialized training and providing educational outreach to the community.
