Power Restored

Power Has Been Restored

Update as of 6:30 p.m., October 31, 2019

As of 6:00 p.m., power has been restored to over 25,000 customers affected by safety power shutoffs. One customer remains without service, in the southwest outskirts of Julian.

We are very appreciative for the patience of our customers and communities impacted by these safety power shutoffs. The safety of the public, our customers and employees is our highest priority.

All Community Resource Centers have been demobilized.

Update as of 5:45 p.m., October 31, 2019

More progress has been made restoring power to customers and communities impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs, after our crews completed visual inspections of additional power lines by foot, vehicle, and helicopter.

As of 4 p.m., power has been restored to about 80 percent, or 20,000 customers affected by safety power shutoffs. About 5,000 customers remain without power.

We are working as quickly and as safely as possible to restore power to the remaining customers, but high winds have remained a challenge in some areas throughout the day. Helicopter patrols can only be done safely within certain wind speed limits.

Before power can be safely restored, crews must conduct patrols to visually inspect power lines to determine if there is any damage that needs to be repaired before turning power back on. Throughout the day today, our crews have been working hard to conduct patrols.

For the latest total count of customers restored and a list of communities where restoration has occurred, visit sdge.com/ready.

For the latest estimated restoration times for communities that are still without power, visit sdge.com/outagemap. Restoration times are adjusted as more information becomes available. If damage is found on a circuit, restoration times may be pushed back in order to allow time for repairs to be made.

Update as of 2:15 p.m., October 31, 2019

More progress has been made restoring power to customers and communities impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs, after our crews completed visual inspections of additional power lines by foot, vehicle, and helicopter.

More than 16,000 customers (or about 66 percent of those affected by safety power shutoffs) now have electric service.

Communities that have had power restored partially or fully include: Alpine*, Dulzura*, El Cajon, Encinitas*, Escondido, Fallbrook, Julian, Mount Laguna*, Pala, Poway*, Ramona, Rancho Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Fe*, unincorporated area east of San Juan Capistrano, San Pasqual and Sycuan reservations, and Valley Center. (*fully restored).

As of 2 p.m., we have about 8,000 customers who remain without power due to safety power shutoffs.

Before power can be safely restored, crews must conduct patrols to visually inspect power lines to determine if there is any damage that needs to be repaired before turning power back on.

Patrols are being conducted on foot, by vehicle, as well as with the support of three helicopters.

When visually inspecting de-energized power lines, crews are looking for safety hazards like downed lines, debris or tree branches caught on the line, or broken hardware before deeming the line safe to restore.

It’s difficult to predict how long a patrol might take given the varied length of each power line, the terrain, conditions of lines, and whether aerial patrols are required. Some circuits are located in rural, mountainous areas that require a helicopter to patrol. In those cases, wind speeds need to be below 35 mph in order for the helicopter to fly safely.  The helicopters may or may not be marked with the SDG&E logo.

To support impacted customers, SDG&E has opened six Community Resource Centers and two Community Information Centers today.

Community Resource Centers: 8 a.m.- 6 p.m.
With the exception of the Julian site, all Community Resource Centers will have ice and a water truck for large animals. In addition, these sites will offer snacks, bottled water, and up-to-date information, as well as a place for people to charge their phone.

Update as of 10:15 a.m., October 31, 2019

Our crews continue to make progress restoring power to customers and communities impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs.

Before power can be safely restored, crews must conduct patrols to visually inspect power lines to determine if there is any damage that needs to be repaired before turning power back on. Patrols are currently underway in more than half of the electrical circuits that were impacted by safety power shutoffs.

For the latest total count of customers restored and a list of communities where restoration has occurred, visit sdge.com/ready.

For the latest estimated restoration times for communities that are still without power, visit sdge.com/outagemap. Restoration times are adjusted as more information becomes available. Patrols began yesterday, and are being done by foot and vehicle, with the support of three helicopters. Patrols resumed immediately at daylight this morning and will continue throughout the day today. Our goal is to restore power to impacted residents and communities as safely and as quickly as possible.

We recognize there is never a good time to lose power, and we sincerely thank our customers for their patience and understanding.

Update as of 3:30 p.m., October 30, 2019

The safety of the public, our customers and employees is our highest priority.

Improved weather conditions in portions of Rainbow, Valley Center and Orange County are allowing our crews to begin patrolling power lines impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs.

We encourage residents who are without power to regularly check our Outage Map for the latest estimates on restoration times.

Although the weather remains cool (forecasted to be in the 30s and 40s in the backcountry overnight), fire conditions remain extreme because of widespread low humidity, dried vegetation (with low fuel moisture) and lack of rainfall.

To support impacted customers, SDG&E is prepared to open seven Community Resource Centers and two Community Information Centers tomorrow (Oct. 30). All Community Resource Centers, except for the Julian location, will have ice, as well as a water truck for livestock. At these facilities, residents can also get snacks and up-to-date information, and charge their phone. Community Information Centers will provide information only.

Update as of 8:30 a.m., October 29, 2019

Currently, there are no SDG&E customers experiencing outages due to Public Safety Power Shutoffs. With another round of Santa Ana winds forecasted to hit portions of our region this week, SDG&E made notifications yesterday to approximately 33,000 customers who live in high fire risk areas that could potentially be impacted by safety power shutoffs within the next 24 hours.

The forecasted weather has the potential to be the strongest Santa Ana wind event so far this season, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a Red Flag Warning for the mountains and valleys of San Diego County, as well as inland Orange County, starting at 11 p.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. Thursday.

“Locally damaging winds will be possible with this upcoming Santa Ana event,” according to the San Diego office of the National Weather Service. “Winds will be strongest through passes/canyons and in the foothills. Isolated gusts up to 80 mph possible.”

Based on current weather conditions, SDG&E projects the following communities could potentially be affected by safety power shutoffs: Alpine, Boulevard, Campo, Descanso, Dulzura, El Cajon (portions of), Encinitas (portions of), Escondido (portions of), Jacumba, Jamul (portions of), Julian, Lakeside (portions of), Mount Laguna, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Pine Valley, Potrero, Poway, Ramona, Ranchita, Rancho Santa Fe (portions of), San Clemente (unincorporated area east of), San Juan Capistrano (unincorporated area east of), Santa Ysabel, Valley Center, and Warner Springs. The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch warning from Tuesday 10 p.m. until Thursday 6 p.m. for San Diego County Mountains and Valleys and Inland Orange County.

Portions of San Diego and south Orange counties are expected to experience moderate to locally strong Santa Ana winds beginning between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday. Winds are expected to peak Wednesday morning and again on Thursday morning.

SDG&E remains on high alert and is closely monitoring the weather as windy conditions can elevate fire risk. To protect fire-prone communities, SDG&E may need to turn off power for safety.

On Monday afternoon (Oct. 28), SDG&E made notifications to approximately 33,000 customers who live in high risk areas that could potentially be impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs later this week. These notifications were made via multiple channels: outbound dialer calls, text messages, and emails.

Based on current weather conditions, SDG&E projects the following communities could potentially be affected by safety power shutoffs: Alpine, Boulevard, Campo, Descanso, Dulzura, El Cajon, Encinitas, Escondido, Jacumba, Jamul, Julian, Lakeside, Mount Laguna, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Pine Valley, Potrero, Poway, Ramona, Ranchita, Rancho Santa Fe, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Ysabel, Valley Center, and Warner Springs. To see a map of potentially affected communities, visit sdge.com/ready.

While about approximately 33,000 customers were notified, it does not mean all of these customers will have their power turned off. Weather conditions are dynamic and depending on how they materialize, some of these customers may or may not have their power turned off.

As weather trends become more certain, SDG&E will provide additional notifications to customers, within 1-4 hours of a shutoff, if possible.

The safety of the public, our customers and employees is our highest priority. We recognize safety power shutoffs are disruptive, and we sincerely thank our customers for their patience and understanding.

Posted at 9:40 p.m., October 25, 2019

With improved weather conditions, our crews were able to patrol and visually inspect power lines in some communities impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs and have made significant progress restoring power to impacted customers. By around 7:30 p.m. tonight, power has been restored to about 12,000 customers, more than half of the customers (19,500) who were impacted by safety power shutoffs.

All customers impacted by safety power shutoffs in East Poway have had their power restored. Electric service has also been restored to portions of the following communities: Alpine, Boulevard, Campo, Dehesa, Descanso, Guatay, Ramona, Valley Center and Viejas. Currently, about 7,450 customers in the following communities remain without power: parts of Boulevard, Campo, Descanso, Cuyamaca, Julian, La Jolla reservation, Mesa Grande, Palomar Mountain, Pine Valley, Potrero, Santa Ysabel, Witch Creek and Wynola.

When daylight returns tomorrow, our crews will resume patrols of power lines to look for any damage prior to restoring power to the remaining customers. If damage is found, repairs will need to be made before power can be restored. When patrolling, crews are looking for safety hazards like downed lines, debris or tree branches caught on the line, or broken hardware before deeming the line safe to restore.

It’s difficult to predict how long a patrol might take given the varied length of each power line, the terrain, and whether aerial patrols are required. Some circuits are located in rural, mountainous areas that require a helicopter to patrol. In those cases, wind speeds need to be below 35 mph in order for the helicopter to fly safely.

We encourage residents who are without power to regularly check our Outage Map (sdge.com/outagemap) for the latest estimates on restoration times.

Tomorrow (10/26), SDG&E will open five Community Resource Centers and two Community Information Centers to support customers who are still without power.

Community Resource Centers: Open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
These facilities will offer water, snacks, phone charging, ice, water trucks for livestock (residents should bring their own vessel for transporting water) and up-to-date information on outages.

  • Descanso Branch Library: 9545 River Dr, Descanso, CA 91916
  • Whispering Winds Catholic Camp: 17606 Harrison Park Road, Julian, CA 92036

  • Warner Springs Resource Center: 30950 CA-79, Warner Springs, CA 92086
  • Lake Morena Community Church:  29765 Oak Drive, Campo, CA 91906

Everyone is encouraged to sign up to receive alerts from SDG&E at sdge.com/notifications so they can stay up to date on potential public safety power shutoffs. If you have a loved one living in an area that could potentially be affected and you are not an SDG&E account holder, you can sign up for notifications by ZIP code at sdge.com/notifications.

Improved weather conditions in portions of the county are allowing our crews to begin patrolling power lines to over 5,000 customers impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs.

Some of the communities we are starting to patrol in are portions of Alpine, East Poway, Dehesa, Descanso, Palomar Mountain, Viejas and East Valley Center.

We encourage residents who are without power to regularly check our Outage Map for the latest estimates on restoration times.

Everyone is encouraged to sign up to receive alerts from SDG&E at sdge.com/MyAccount so they can stay up to date on potential public safety power shutoffs.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for 5 a.m., Thursday (10/24), through 5 p.m., Friday (10/25), for the mountains and valleys in San Diego County and inland areas in Orange County.

SDG&E’s meteorology team is closely monitoring the weather as windy conditions elevate fire risk in the backcountry. To protect fire-prone communities, SDG&E may need to turn off power for safety.

While Santa Ana winds have been mild in the past few days, conditions are shifting and SDG&E has had to turn off power for safety in the community of Descanso impacting 19 customers.

To support customers in affected areas, SDG&E is planning to open two Community Resource Centers in Descanso and in Julian, 8 a.m.- 6 p.m.

These facilities are places residents can go to get water and snacks, charge their phones, and get up-to-date information on outages.

SDG&E has been preparing for this weather event and notifying customers as needed.

Notifications via outbound dialer calls, text messages and emails were made to about 41,600 customers. This number includes the approximately 24,000 customers who were notified on Tuesday about potential safety shutoffs.

At this time, SDG&E projects the following communities could be affected: Alpine, Barona, Barrett Lake, Black Mountain Ranch, Boulevard, Campo, Coronado Hills, Cuyamaca, Descanso, East Poway, East Valley Center, Elfin Forest, Julian, Lake Hodges, Mesa Grande, Mount Laguna, Olivenhain, Palomar Mountain, Pine Valley, Potrero, Ramona, Rancho Bernardo West, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Santa Ysabel, Shelter Valley, Viejas, and Warner Springs. (A map of the areas that could potentially be affected is posted at sdge.com/ready.)

While about 41,600 customers have been notified, it does not mean all these customers will have their power turned off. In the past, the actual number of customers who were affected by Public Safety Power Shutoffs was smaller than the number of customers notified.

As weather trends become more certain, SDG&E adjusts where shutoffs are needed for safety in order to minimize customer impact to the greatest extent possible.

San Diego’s backcountry is expected to experience Santa Ana winds Sunday through Tuesday (Oct. 20-22), with winds expected to peak on Monday in the 30-40 miles per hour range.

SDG&E’s meteorology team is closely monitoring the weather as windy conditions can elevate fire risk in the backcountry. To protect fire-prone communities, SDG&E may need to turn off power for safety.

On Saturday (10/19) around 1 p.m., SDG&E made notifications to about 1,000 customers who live in high risk areas that could potentially be impacted by a Public Safety Power Shutoff. These notifications were made via multiple channels: outbound dialer calls, text messages, and emails.

While about 1,000 customers were notified, it does not mean all of these customers will have their power turned off. Weather conditions are dynamic and depending on how they materialize, some of these customers may or may not have their power turned off.

As weather trends become more certain, SDG&E will provide updated notifications to customers within 24 hours of an anticipated public safety power shutoff and then again within 1-4 hours of a shutoff, if possible.

Based on current weather trends, SDG&E projects the following communities could experience Public Safety Power Shutoffs: Boulevard, Boulder Creek, Cameron, Crestwood, La Posta, Valley Center East and Viejas. (A map of the areas that could potentially be affected is posted at sdge.com/ready.)

Customers who have received alerts from us are encouraged to activate their personal emergency preparedness plan and have emergency supplies on hand, including water, food, flashlights, extra batteries, and battery packs for their smart phones.
