An innovative SDG&E invention that has helped thousands of residents in San Diego and southern Orange counties save millions in installation costs for private rooftop solar was recently granted two patents by the US Patent & Trademark Office.
The Renewable Meter Adapter was invented by two pioneering SDG&E employees—Ken Parks and Mike Colburn—who were inspired by the growing demand for private solar and the roadblocks many customers were facing to go solar.
The device simplifies the interconnection process, allowing customers to bypass electric service panel upgrades that are often required to support rooftop solar systems. This allows customers to eliminate the hassle and cost of associated construction to walls, stucco and landscaping, which can cost upwards of $10,000, as well as related delays and additional permitting requirements.
Since becoming available in 2015, more than 6,500 SDG&E customers have saved nearly $8 million in solar installation costs by using the Renewable Meter Adapter.
In addition to the RMA, we’ve developed tools like an online application and “Fast Track” process that have helped many of our 124,000 solar customers simplify their path to clean, renewable energy.
