San Diego Hero Dies Battling Thomas Fire

San Diego lost a local fire hero this week in the battle against the massive Thomas Fire in Ventura County.

Cory Iverson, a 32-year-old Escondido resident and CAL FIRE San Diego engineer, made the ultimate sacrifice while working to protect Southern California communities from the blaze which has spread across more than 250,000 acres and destroyed nearly 1,000 structures over the past two weeks.

We want to offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Iverson family and our sincere gratitude to Cory—and all the men and women fighting fires across California—for their dedication and commitment to service. We work closely with CAL FIRE and other regional firefighting agencies and empathize with the sorrow they must feel from this tragic loss.

Iverson joined CAL FIRE as a volunteer at 18-years-old and dedicated 14 years to the organization and the safety of California residents. Iverson is survived by his wife and daughter, who are expecting to welcome a second daughter to their family this spring.
