Last week, local high school students participated in a unique, hands-on learning experience in aquaculture and marine life. They tagged young white seabass they raised in their classrooms in preparation for their future release into local waters.
The program is part of the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute’s (HSWRI) Seabass in the Classroom that provides a creative approach to educating children about the benefits of aquaculture—like replenishment of depleted fisheries and sustainable food production—as they raise, feed, tag and ultimately release the fish into coastal waters.
The fish were tagged with microscopic coded wire tags, so if they are captured in the future, they will add to more than thirty years of valuable data on local marine ecosystems. The HSWRI research is essential to conserving and restoring coastal and marine environments.
