Going to Bat for Sustainability at Petco Park

Petco Park is not just a downtown destination and premier baseball venue. It’s also a leader in clean energy and energy efficiency.

Today, our Vice President of Customer Services, Scott Crider, joined the Padres Chief Operating Officer Erik Greupner and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer to celebrate our hometown team’s commitment to sustainability.

The Padres are currently completing the largest solar installation in Major League Baseball. This project, due to be finished before the new baseball season begins, is a continuation of the leadership the Padres have displayed. A few years ago, the Padres became the first National League team to install energy-saving LED lights and a LED scoreboard.

Thanks to the LEDs, Petco Park saves nearly 1.3 million kWh of energy annually. That’s enough energy to power more than 200 homes for one year. The LEDs, according to the Padres, also improved the lighting quality for the players.

The Padres’ sustainability practices go well beyond lighting to food equipment, pumps, and electrical outlet controls that help reduce energy consumption.

Petco Park is such a fantastic role model for energy efficiency and sustainability, SDG&E recognized the Padres with an Energy Showcase award in 2016. Watch this short video to see how SDG&E partnered with the Padres to achieve energy savings.

Go Padres! You are hitting it out of the park with environmental sustainability!
