#GirlPower was the theme of the weekend as nearly 100 teenage girls learned how to use a firehose, climb a 24-foot ladder, operate a chainsaw and perform CPR over a two-day, hands-on training camp hosted by the women of the San Diego Fire Rescue Department.

We were proud to sponsor and participate in the first ever “Girls Empowerment Camp” in an effort to empower young girls to pursue careers in firefighting and public safety.
The tech side of firefighting
Public safety careers are not all high-action. SDG&E’s in-house meteorologist, Katie Giannecchini, joined the girls at camp to introduce them to the technological and innovative side of firefighting. She shared her experience and highlights of working as a meteorologist for the nation’s largest non-governmental weather system and demonstrated the fire behavior modeling software her team helped develop, which combines real-time data with vegetation conditions to predict the likelihood of fires across the landscape.
