The “G” in SDG&E

The “G” in SDG&E

When most of us think of SDG&E, you probably think of the electricity the company provides that you use in your homes and businesses. But, because the other half of our business is underground and essentially out-of-sight, what the “G” in SDG&E stands for, doesn’t as often come to mind.

While SDG&E has received electric reliability awards every year for the past decade, our natural gas system also safely and reliably delivers gas to our customers. The company operates more than 8,000 miles of natural gas transmission and distribution pipelines that serve 873,000 natural gas customers here in San Diego.

And, for most San Diegans living in the second largest county in California, natural gas is an essential part of our lives. From heating homes and cooking meals to fueling the region’s businesses, hospitals, restaurants, military bases, schools and universities, we depend on this important energy source every day.

Natural gas also fuels the region’s power plants that produce most of the electricity we use daily and fill in the gaps when variable resources like solar and wind aren’t producing power. Many of the region’s transportation fleets, including school buses, also operate on compressed natural gas, reducing emissions in our communities.

Natural gas is a foundation fuel: it is abundant, reliable and affordable; and helps drive our local $179 billion economy and our growing population of more than 3.2 million residents.

To ensure the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to homes and businesses, SDG&E’s natural gas system is designed, constructed, and operated to meet or exceed state and federal pipeline safety regulations. And, our proactive and comprehensive gas pipeline safety programs make sure the integrity of the system is top-notch.
