The annual Fleet Week San Diego is underway, with festivities scheduled through Sunday, Oct. 28, to honor local Sailors, Marines and the Coast Guard for the sacrifices they make to serve our nation.
We have been involved in supporting Fleet Week and nonprofit organizations that serve the military and their families for many, many years.
Ray Robeson, a senior account executive at SDG&E, serves on the board of directors for Fleet Week San Diego, helping to bring together stakeholders to host, organize, and support events throughout the week.
The military sector is a key part of our region’s economy and identity. It generates more than 340,000 of the region’s total jobs in 2017, or about one out of every five jobs in San Diego County, according to the 9th Annual Military Economic Impact Study commissioned by the San Diego Military Advisory Council.
At SDG&E, about 10 percent of our workforce comprises military veterans.
Student STEM Day and Innovation Zone at Fleet Week
At Fleet Week’s Student STEM Day yesterday, our engineers and IT professionals welcomed students from local schools to learn about science, technology, engineering and math careers at the Innovation Zone. They brought little Sphero robots that can be programmed easily via smartphone apps to navigate mazes built from blocks.
About 1,800 students from local schools were bused to the Innovation Zone at the Port Pavilion Building in Downtown San Diego, where they explored a variety of high-tech displays and interactive activities, including drones, robots, virtual reality demonstrations and hands-on experiments.
We are back volunteering at the Innovation Zone today, which is open to the public today through Sunday (Oct. 26-28).
