Energy Makeover Saves Money, Preserves Charm of Historic Hotel

The rich history of the Courtyard-Marriot Hotel is told in the soaring, colorful ceilings and expansive marble columns sourced from Great Britain, France and countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The bronze medallions, antique arches and decorative window grilles contribute to the building’s medieval ambiance. The historic structure, nestled in San Diego’s Gaslamp District, served as the headquarters for San Diego’s Trust & Savings Bank from 1928 until 1994 before it was turned into the 245-room hotel.

A classic old building that holds its merit as fine art in architecture isn’t the likeliest candidate for award-winning energy performance. But with a successful working relationship with SDG&E, the Courtyard-Marriot has earned the ENERGY STAR® certificate for energy efficiency. Virtually all of the original features and design elements of the 1928 building remain intact. However, if you look closely, the chandeliers that brighten up the vast lobby are lit with LEDs, a new water heating system has been implemented and the expansive commercial kitchen and laundry services utilize the latest innovations that have modernized the space.

"With SDG&E’s comprehensive rebate program, our customers can save money and save energy. In addition to the rebates and incentives the Courtyard-Marriott receives for its energy efficiency upgrades, the hotel also monitors electricity use per guest room each month as part of Hersha's EarthView sustainability program which is rolled out to over 100 hotels nationwide." (Hersha 2015 EarthView report).
