Electric Vehicle Day Brings Excitement to the San Diego International Auto Show

The selection has expanded dramatically, prices have come down significantly, and performance is anything but ho hum. When it comes to fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, there are a lot of exciting makes and models that are coming on the market.

To check out the latest and greatest models and test drive them, come to Electric Vehicle (EV) Day at the San Diego International Auto Show on Friday, Dec. 28.

EV Day is sponsored by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), which supports the Eco-Center at the Auto Show to showcase an array of all-electric and plug-in hybrids, for just about every lifestyle. The Eco-Center will be open throughout the four-day Auto Show.

New EV Shopping Assistance Web Portal

Inside this area, the nonprofit Plug In America will introduce a newly designed and customized web portal to assist EV shoppers in the San Diego region. In addition to vehicle specs and photos, the portal provides information about local, state, and federal incentives for purchasing a new electric vehicle, EV charging pricing plans, fuel savings comparison between driving gas and electric, popularity ratings and reviews, and more.

The robust web portal also links customers to local dealerships whose staff have undergone specialized training so they can answer EV-specific questions, such as the amount of a standard California Clean Air Vehicle Rebate, the application process for obtaining a carpool sticker or the basics about different levels of EV charging.

Visit sdge.com/EV to access comprehensive EV resources, including Plug in America’s EV shopping assistance website.

SDG&E will have experts available for all four days of the show, Dec. 27-30, to answer questions about EV pricing plans, EV charging infrastructure programs, and other initiatives the company is engaged in to help overcome barriers to EV adoption.

$40K Worth of Opportunity Drawings at Auto Show

During this year’s Auto Show, Plug In America, in collaboration with SDG&E, will host opportunity drawings to give out $40,000 worth of electric vehicle rebates. Ten rebates will be given out each day to lucky winners to help them offset the cost of buying or leasing a new fully electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Opportunity drawing terms and restrictions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Winners must provide Plug In America with a copy of their most recent SDG&E bill to redeem their rebate.
  • One winner per household.
  • Must use the rebate to purchase or lease a new qualified plug-in electric vehicle from PlugStar Preferred Dealers certified by Plug in America (plugstar.com/sdge).
  • The voucher is available only at the time of purchase. The voucher cannot be applied after taking delivery of the vehicle.

More than 30,000 EVs are currently on local roads in our region, and the number of people and businesses making the switch to electric vehicles continues to grow. To sustain that growth, there are now more than 40 plug-in EV models on the market from every major car manufacturer, including new, more affordable models that have a range of more than 300 miles on a single battery charge. Gotta drive to LA and back? No problem.

Participating EV manufacturers to date include: Kia, Volvo, Toyota, Honda, and Volkswagen. A number of Ride & Drives located around the Convention Center will include EVs and hybrids.
