Team SDG&E participating in Coastal Cleanup Day

Coastal Cleanup Day Yields 130,000 Pounds of Trash

Over the weekend, 7,000 plus volunteers converged at more than 100 local beaches, parks, and other outdoor recreational spaces for Coastal Cleanup Day. A few hundred of our employees, as well as those from Sempra Energy, our parent company, took part in the largest environmental cleanup of the year.

Collectively, volunteers picked up 130,000 pounds of trash or about 65 tons, making it one of the most successful days in the event’s 34-year history.

This was our company’s 17th year participating in the annual event, organized by I Love A Clean San Diego. From field employees to senior executives, our employees and their families teamed up to pick up trash and beautify our environment, including painting murals. Over the past two decades, SDG&E has mobilized more than 8,000 employees to volunteer at the annual event.

Team Sempra/SDG&E was led by SDG&E’s newly appointed CEO and chairman, Kevin Sagara, a surfer and biker who loves to fish and serves on the board of directors of the Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute.

Celebrating Success

As a special thank you, SDG&E and the Padres will recognize Coastal Cleanup Day participants with a Volunteer Appreciation Night at tonight’s Padres game. Volunteers received a promo code to purchase discounted tickets and will be recognized on-field for helping to keep San Diego clean.

Shared Commitment to Protecting the Environment

Like I Love A Clean San Diego, our environmental commitment goes beyond a single-day volunteer event. Our employees spend time off-the-clock serving on nonprofit boards and committees. For example, Adrian Salas, one of our account executives who works with major customers on sustainability and infrastructure projects, serves on I Love A Clean San Diego’s board of directors.
