Celebrating International Women’s Day with Girls Empowerment Camps to Inspire the Next Generation of Women to Explore Careers in Fire Service

Here at San Diego Gas & Electric, we believe our strength comes from our diversity. We’re passionate in encouraging our region’s diverse youth to pursue careers that challenge and excite them. In honor of International Women’s Day (IWD), we’re highlighting the work of some of our partners who are spending their IWD weekend doing just that.

While many organizations are taking the time to recognize women this IWD, Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) is taking it a step further. They’re spending theirs hosting their Girls Empowerment Camp (GEC), and San Diego Fire Rescue Department just recently opened registration for theirs, which will take place next month.

OCFA GEC 2019

Both GECs bring together teens ages 14-18 with fire service professionals for two free days of training, interactive experiences and career exploration in fire service.

In Orange County, campers are getting exciting, hands-on experiences including ropes and knots, CPR/first aid, aerial ladder climbing, confidence course, roof props and hose handling, as well as information and guidance from fire service professionals.

OCFA GEC 2019

As OCFA wraps up their GEC Mar. 8, San Diego Fire Rescue Department is gearing up for theirs, which will be held Apr. 4-5, 2020 at the San Diego Fire Department Training Center near Terminal 2 of the San Diego International Airport. The GEC is not an overnight camp but includes two full days of activities that run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. – lunch is provided.

Every GEC camper will receive hands-on training using firefighting equipment, CPR/AED training, and an introduction to a variety of public safety careers in fire service that will give the girls the confidence and inspiration to achieve their goals.
