#10WeeksofSummer: SDG&E Meteorologists Forecast Next Heat Wave

Our team of meteorologists at SDG&E forecast a statewide heat wave will bring extreme temperatures to the area in the coming days. Conditions will be hot and dry and are expected to last through the middle of next week.

Every day, our meteorologists are monitoring short and long-range weather forecast models in an effort to provide the most current information to our field crews and first responders. Whether they need to respond to worksites with the right protective gear in the rain or load up on extra water when temperatures are expected to soar, having access to the most up-to-date weather information ensures that lineman,  gas crews and first responders can perform their jobs as safely as possible.

Our meteorologists also play a critical role in evaluating information like temperatures, humidity and wind speeds to help us make operational decisions and better prepare our customers and our communities for significant changes in the climate.

As temperatures rise, so will air conditioning use, which leads to increased demand on the power grid. While we don’t foresee any issues with the power supply, we do encourage our customers to conserve energy to help relieve stress on the grid and save money on their bills.

Smart energy choices

At SDG&E, we want to make sure our customers have access to the latest tools and resources they need to make smart energy choices and save money. Home and business owners can visit SDG&E’s Marketplace, to shop, compare prices and find participating stores to purchase energy-efficient products. With a smart thermostat, customers can take advantage of SDG&E’s Reduce Your Use Thermostat program and participate in “event days” where they are called on to conserve energy through the Reduce Your Use rewards program.

Customers can also use the following tips to conserve energy during the heat wave:

  • Adjust your thermostat to 78° F or higher, health permitting.
  • Do loads of laundry during off-peak hours.
  • Run your dishwasher in the morning, or late at night.
  • Use smart strips or unplug items when not in use.
  • Replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent or LEDs.
