SDG&E Wins the Gold for Electric Vehicle Charging Solution
Ready, set, gold! SDG&E continues to lead the charge in the electric vehicle (EV) sector after recently winning the gold medal of technology awards for the first of its kind EV charging solution.
The prestigious Technology Transfer Award from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) recognizes SDG&E for applying EPRI standards to design and deploy the innovative Power Your Drive program, which will roll out 3,500 charging stations to multi-family communities and underserved communities over the next three years.
Charging the grid
The EPRI award specifically highlights SDG&E’s grid integrated electric vehicle charging infrastructure, which features special rates that encourage EV drivers to charge their cars when electricity supply, including renewable energy, is plentiful and energy prices are low. With off-peak charging, EVs would be efficiently integrated onto the grid, helping to avoid the need for more electric infrastructure. Customers who drive EVs can sign up here to charge their vehicle during off-peak hours.
“EPRI is vigilant about recognizing companies that are creating change in the energy business,” said Greg Haddow, manager of Clean Transportation at SDG&E and 30-year company veteran. “To be acknowledged for truly advancing grid optimization solutions through Power Your Drive means a lot to SDG&E and me personally.”
Presented annually, EPRI’s Technology Transfer Awards recognize power system leaders and innovators who have helped their company deliver safe, affordable, reliable and environmentally responsible electricity. The non-profit organization brings together scientists, engineers, academia and industry to tackle some of the biggest challenges in the electricity industry. They conduct research and development relating to the generation, delivery and use of electricity for the benefit of the public. Challenges include reliability, efficiency, affordability, health, safety and the environment.
